Herodotus: The Comic Book

Περσέων μέν νυν οἱ λόγιοι Φοίνικας αἰτίους φασὶ γενέσθαι τῆς διαφορῆς. (1.1)

 

Got that? 

 

Herodotus has his own style. And Ancient Greek is always going to be the best language in which to enjoy that style.

 

But not everyone who reads Herodotus' Histories has enough Greek. And I believe that the comic book edition enhances the reader's ability to appreciate Herodotus' nuances regardless of the language. 

 

Ultimately, I would like to produce this comic in Ancient Greek. For now, I want as many readers as possible to be able to enjoy the fruits of this one man's labour.

Yes, Perhaps I'm a Classics advocate. I admit it. I do believe that the beauty of many Classical works speaks for itself.

 

That doesn't mean, however, that sometimes folks don't need a little nudge to get to those works. And I don't mean dumbing it down either. I mean presenting it in a form which is concordant with other works they are appreciating. 

 

It's no new phenomenon that the comic book form is being harnessed for its facility of ease, inherent attractiveness and ease in delivering ideas. Herodotus' Histories is perfect for this.

I'm a teacher. I fill many other roles too, but I'm a teacher and love it. As well as rushing to the shops to buy the newest Asterix comic, I'm always thinking about how best to present the works of Greek and Roman authors to contemporary audiences. 

 

Herodotus: The Comic Book is a continuation and natural development of this. The comic book is intended for all audiences: those with no scholarly background in the Classics and those with plenty.
